These photographs introduce our Swordgrass Moths and Xylenine Sallows (Family Noctuidae, Subfamily Noctuinae, Tribe Xylenini).  Excluded from this display are the Pinion Moths (genus Lithophane) because that group was already introduced in an earlier post on this site (on 27 February 2014).  The 21 images of moths shown here represent 15 genera and 19 different species found and photographed in either northeastern North Dakota or northwestern Minnesota.

Why don’t you try to identity a few of these moths by matching these images with those found on pages 462-463 and 470-481 of the Peterson Field Guide to Moths of Northeastern North America.
